NON-TCOLE-CERTIFIED APPLICANTS
If you do not have a Texas Peace Officer Certification through the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE), you will start out as a Police Cadet/Recruit. After you graduate from a Basic Peace Officer Academy and obtain your Texas Peace Officer Certification, you will be at Step 1 of the Police Officer pay scale.

TCOLE-CERTIFIED APPLICANTS
If you already have a Texas Peace Officer Certification through TCOLE, your training and experience will be reviewed by the Chief of Police to determine eligibility for a lateral position. If approved, laterals with 3+ years of full-time experience will start at step 2, and laterals with 5+ years of full-time experience will start at step 3 on the Police Officer pay scale. The Police Chief shall make the final decision regarding whether lateral entries prior to years of service qualify.

Out-of-State officers must be TCOLE certified to qualify for a lateral position. If not, you will be viewed as a NON-TCOLE-CERTIFED APPLICANT regardless of experience or years of service.
